I didn't think it was possible to worship you more. Holy shit, you're a brilliant writer.
So glad someone tweeted this to me, my dog Pinky has cancer & they thought I'd dig it.

She comes home today.

Much respect,

I'm a lifelong cat owner and I recently got my first dog. I was so delighted with how unconditionally my dog loves me. I'm not used to receiving that kind of love from an animal, and it's really a wonderful experience. With cats, you sometimes have to work for their love (which, as weird as it sounds, is still a rewarding experience), but not so with dogs. Dogs love you the moment they lay eyes on you, and it's forever.

These words you have written could not be more true. I got my fur kid Mimi at just 7 weeks old. She turned 6 in January. Though there is way more gray fur than when we first met, she will always be my baby. The longest we've ever been apart was 8 days, and that was only because I had to be in the hospital for a particularly bad case of pneumonia. I cannot fathom my life once she leaves me. Who will jump on my chest, plop their butt down, and sleep on my left boob? Who will try to smother me with their back fat, and glare when I move them because I need oxygen? Who will sit in the living room, giving me the "feed me" stare a solid 30 minutes before its time? I will always have a dog in my life but none can take the place of my very first who was my sole responsibility. They are very special creatures. This was her the day I brought her home...

Beautifully said. I'm sitting here watching my big black dog Murphy gnaw on a bone. I adopted him 5 years ago during the darkest days of my entire life. He gave me a reason to get out of bed and keep going. He had been sitting in the local animal shelter for almost two months when I adopted him. He was about 3 or 4 years old and had clearly been someone's dog but no one came to claim him. How can you let any pet go? I don't know how people can give their dogs away, not care, not do the basics like food and water. Dogs love you no matter what. I stepped on his tail yesterday and he just looked up at me and started wagging it and giving me that puppy dog smile.

Wonderful post Margaret. I'm with you---a pet is love and responsibility for life. I myself have a cat and her adoption day was similar to your account of getting Ralph---people just dropping cats off because they were "not wanted" anymore. Unbelievable. A pet is eternally grateful for the care it receives and I could not part with mine any more than I could a family member.
