I've been everything from vegetarian to vegan, to all in between but i've mostly made choices for 'health' (ie to lose weight) and have found I tend to gain a lot of weight on vegan/vegetarian diets... if I maybe ate a complex carbohydrate-free vegan diet, it might be okay, but whenever I've tried, there has been a massive reliance on pasta and breads and gluten to round out a meal.

a buncha years ago in Vancouver, they had quite an active food not bombs local that was actually shut down by the police on several occasions because they didn't have a food serving permit. seriously.

i think the whole food issue is amazing; we are such a lucky group of people that we can have the choice of what to eat and how to eat it; i agree too, people are far too picky, and there is far too much waste. i don't think i'll be eating out of dumpster anytime soon tho - hopefully.

Margaret,

I was having a really slow, boring day....and you fixed it. This post made me laugh to tears, til my ribs hurt and I couldn't breathe. Thank you for for nearly killing me. With jubilation.

happy v-day margaret.. and by v i mean victory. and congratulations on the poop find and i totally understand why you didn't want to eat it... the protein value is minimal at best. and something was definitely tortured and killed for it to get there on the floor like that.

A perpetual houseguest of my hippieish friend was a militant freegan (and a freeloader in other ways)... apparently he had memorized the "dump" times of the local Bay Ridge restaurants and would pick up the day's take shortly after dumping.

It seemed like so much work, I often wondered why the guy couldn't just get a job... but my friend didn't seem to mind. I guess he appreciated the free food more than he minded the skank-factor.

As to veganism... the only time I ever eat vegan is at Raquy's dumbek retreats (which I highly recommend, by the way -- drumming helps your dancing and will give you killer zills). Her chef (and sometime Caveman) Rami is the most amazing, AMAZING vegan cook. And I mean AMAZING. (And did I mention he is amazing?)

Sadly, the few times I've eaten at vegan restaurants have never quite compared to Rami's delectable eggplant moussaka .. and I'm a terrible cook of even simple things, so I could never go vegan on my own. But for those few weeks a year...... :->

I love the free culture here in San Francisco! It is a total gold mine and I think it is even cooler that folks are getting so organized about it now that there are scheduled "free" swaps. Its all so 60s chic and just reminds a woman like me who lives in the Haight that life still has some of the great values made popular here 40 years ago. Just for the record I too have a glorious collection of freebies from the streets of SF. I still mourn the loss of a beautiful victorian coach in the Sunset that I sat down on to claim and then proceeded to call every person I knew to see how I could get it moved. To no avail I had to walk away and leave the beautiful find for the next freegan rodent to delight over.
Such as life!
