WM3 Update

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

I just got this from Lorri Davis. Its been such a long and painful journey with the WM3. I want to see them free so badly, as do so many many people. I know the economy is fucked up, things are weird and scary, but think about how much we have compared to these guys. They’ve been in prison all this time. Can you imagine? I want to do everything I can for them. Please read this and consider donating something. Every bit helps.

Dear Margaret:

I hope this note finds you well. Damien and I have news for you, and a request for your assistance.

Because of your help, we have made amazing progress in this agonizingly slow process. In November 2007 we filed an appeal in Arkansas’s Federal District Court that proved the innocence of Damien, Jessie and Jason. The filing contained new evidence from a relentless investigation and legal strategy that was accomplished only because we had your support.

We were sent back to State court, which has added a year to our work, but here we are, ready to file in the Arkansas Supreme Court on March 11. The filing will include all of Damien’s actual innocence claims, most important:

DNA test results that fail to link Echols, Baldwin or Misskelley to the crime scene; in light of the prosecution claim that Echols sodomized the victims, the lack of his DNA at the crime scene is exculpatory itself. DNA test results showing that a hair found in the ligature of one of the victims matches Terry Hobbs, the step-father of another one of the victims.

Scientific analysis from some of the nation’s leading forensics experts, stating that wounds on the victims’ bodies were caused by animals at the crime scene – not by knives used by the perpetrators, as the prosecution claimed.

We have also just instituted a New Evidence Tip Line that we hope will result in even more new evidence and witnesses that can support the innocence of Damien, Jason and Jesse.

We have about 6 months to make a lot of noise. We need to get this story out in as many media outlets as possible, especially in the mainstream national media such as the New York Times, and other important publications. We need to reach out to our leaders in the legal community; from legal scholars to prominent legal organizations such as the ACLU, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, Southern Law Center, etc. We must get the story out to former federal and state judges, and former prosecutors who, when they learn more about this case, can send an important message to the court that a terrible wrong has been done. We must also inform our political representatives, seek their help, if possible, or at least raise the profile of Damien’s case among important local, state and national politicians. In essence, we need everyone possible to know about this grave injustice, and to be led to act.

I need help with this, and can’t use the defense funds to bring on a professional. Lonnie Soury led the public campaign to free Marty Tankleff, a man who spent 17 years in a New York prison for a crime he didn’t commit. Lonnie worked obsessively at getting Marty’s story on shows like 48 Hours, into news outlets like the New York Times, and he made certain the story was known by every politician, lawyer, judge, reporter… He also was successful in garnering the support of scores of federal judges and US Attorneys and local prosecutors to sign an amicus brief asking the court to grant Marty Tankleff a new trial.

We need this kind of exposure, we need it desperately. It is the key to bringing pressure on the state of Arkansas to do the right thing, to exonerate Damien, Jason and Jessie.

I need about $25K to bring Lonnie on for the next year. I need your help to do it. We now have a 501c3 sponsor. Please make your tax deductible checks out to Arkansas Take Action, and mail to ATA, 125 Englewood Rd, Cammack Vlg, AR 72207, or donate online at Freewestmemphis3.org. A donation of $2500, $5000 would go a long way in getting started, and the window of opportunity is wide open.

We all know if it weren’t for your continued support, I wouldn’t be writing to you now, and we would’ve lost something unthinkable; the life of someone we care about deeply. We will be victorious, but we need help, and we need to act fast.

With gratitude,

Lorri Davis

The Hotness

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

When I was little, I used to watch my mom dip whole jalapeno peppers into fiery hot chili paste and eat them like she was dipping celery sticks into peanut butter, and I would scream because the peppers were so spicy that MY eyes would be watering and I wasn’t even eating them. She would say, “no, that is not spicy.” But her entire face would be covered in sweat and her eyes would be full of tears, so I think it was spicy, but she didn’t want to show weakness.

I couldn’t tolerate anything spicy as a child, which is hard if you are Korean. My mom had to dip my kimchee into a little bowl of water before I could put it into my mouth. Of course this gave me a kind of spice inferiority complex that I had to somehow fix in adulthood. How I dealt with it was to push my senses as far as I could, seeking out the hottest peppers, the hottest hot sauce, the hottest everything. I doused everything in Tabasco, so much so that I once got a free table caddy filled with every kind of sauce that Tabasco makes, because I was such a loyal, vocal and famous customer. It sits on my dining room table permanently because I am always going to use it. I have even been known to keep Tabasco in my purse, which has sadly been left behind since the TSA now regulates liquids and gels in carry on luggage. I just have to trust that they will have it where I am going. Fortunately, they usually do.

Lately, my husband and I have been getting into Thai food which if done right is incredibly spicy. Here’s some folksy wisdom, if it hurts going in, and I assure you, it hurts coming out. I don’t think I am happy unless pure pepper spray is coming out of my ass. I could get another job escorting young women out in the streets at night because I am like a walking mace dispenser. I think I like it when my asshole is on fire. I don’t see any other explanation. And it always is on fire. When I wake up, the first thing I say to my husband is not ‘good morning’, or ‘I love you’. It’s ‘fire in the hole’. Just so he knows to get out of my way because I am going to make a big, flaming, acidic burning dispatch into my long suffering toilet. If you live like me, and your dinner requires its own safeword, then you understand. I am, the hotness.

Liberate the Vagina Show

Thursday, February 12th, 2009

There are few things I hate more than ignorance and one of them is overly cold air conditioning during the winter. I am one of those people who is always cold. I am freezing all the time. My hands and feet are like blocks of ice and during the winter I am always completely bundled up head to toe. I think I must be part lizard or something because when it is cold outside, I am practically incapacitated. I need to stay on a hot rock or something until spring comes.

My hates collided when I did an episode of the TV show, The Doctors. I was asked to host the show because of my extensive interest in/knowledge of the vagina. I think it’s very exciting for a mainstream TV show like this to want to do an entire episode based on the vagina and to ask someone like me, a real ‘expert’ on the subject, to play co-host. It was really pretty fun, except for the fact that it was totally freezing outside and the air conditioning inside was cranked up as high as it could go. Everyone was cold! I was so cold that I got a temperature migraine on one side of my head. If you watch the trailer, you can see even though it was cold, I still managed to get some zingers in.

You can imagine how disappointed I was to hear that the show was never aired because the powers that be at the networks thought that it was too racy! That is ludicrous and ignorant and perpetuates the ‘mystery’ of the vagina! How are we supposed to learn about our bodies if we aren’t even allowed to discuss them in detail? The show was set up so that women could talk to each other frankly about what is going on down there, and if we aren’t able to bring up the subject even in a medical context, when can we bring it up? I think it is a great disservice to women to silence us when we attempt to share truths about our bodies.

Are we supposed to believe that our bodies are somehow wrong and dirty and bad because we are female? This kind of thinking is archaic and misogynist. I expect better from the world, and certainly more from television. Turn the a/c off and turn your minds on!
