Letterman’s Confession

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

I am as stunned and amazed at David Letterman’s startling confession the other night as much as anyone else is, but I am also proud and happy for him for handling such an ugly situation with such grace and wit. It’s a wonderful example for all of us who tend to live messy lives. The mess can always be cleared with humility and honesty and a heady dose of good humor. It is always beautiful when someone accepts and admits their humanity. A lot of what I do is based on that idea – accepting your own humanity and sharing that acceptance so that others feel better.

I really wanted to cry when watching Dave’s rather lengthy and heartfelt speech about the extortion attempt and his indiscretion. It was like your dad admitting he did something wrong. Letterman is like our archetypal father, especially for standup comics. He is the example of how far you can go, how high you can fly, powered by your own funniness, quickness, quirkiness and truth. And he showed us that in the truth, we were all made free and closer and more loved. In the face of trouble, when you tell the truth, it’s always easier. It’s a good lesson for everyone. Thanks dad.
